Cordillera - Forestry

Welcome Students!
This section will focus on how industries and citizens have taken action to conserve Forests.
While reading the following section ask yourself "What are some things that the forestry industry has done to help manage forests? Are these actions enough to preserve forests for future use? What are some of the ways you and your family can live in a more sustainable way?"
The landscape of the Cordillera has long chains of high rugged mountains where parts of this region are covered with forests. In fact, the oldest coniferous trees in Canada are found in this region. The two main forests are the Western coastal forest and the boreal forest. With over 200 sawmills, it produces 80% of Canada's paper. The soil within the Cordillera provides nutrients and water that these trees need for growth.
Some of the actions taken to preserve forests:
  • Forest companies has to meet requirements of the International Standards Organization’s environmental management system, or sustainable forest management certification by the Canadian Standards Association
  • Restrictions on how much land can be deforested yearly
    • Example: B.C. harvests only about one-third of one per cent of total forested land
  • Protected areas have been created to preserve land and forests
    • Example: More than 12 per cent of B.C.’s land has been set aside in parks or protected areas
  • Laws require logged areas to be reforested (new trees must be grown)
